A fun short experience. It's a simple 2D metroid-vania / pinball game. A very novel combination and a lot of fun.

Awesome marriage of pinball, metroidvania, and art executed perfectly

Beautiful pinball metroidvania! Forgettable story, but you arent really playing a pinball game for the story are you? The graphics makes me think of artwork gems such as the samorost games and others of that ilk... But this ofcourse has a completely different gameplay. The marriage of this art and the pinball gameplay makes the game feel like a throwback to my childhood at the same time as a completely new experience!

Yet another metroidvania in comic graphics ... but with pinball? .... interesting. And that's pretty much all there is to say. The pinball mechanic is a really cool idea which works way better than one might think. Besides that, it's a straightforward "go here to get gadget 1 which let's you pass point 2, where you couldn't move forward before" game., with family-friendly graphics and story

Yoku’s Island Express is precision and timing requiring sidescroller that features plenty pinball-like levels, after upgrading with quest items ability to break some stones, swing on plants, dive under water and stationary quick travel cannons. The story is presented by bubble monologues with animal-like voices. It's a solid fantasy world and well written. The environments are rather lively, NPCs are animated though static, effects such as earth shaking, water splashing and other sound/visual effects make an exciting title. You are limited by points that you can increase and there are plenty to lay about or respawned at pinball-like areas. The difficulty comes from the design itself, I often got stuck in one area that seemed to have obstacles all around it but I was missing items in inventory that would give me additional abilities. Then I would proceed just to get stuck with a similar problem, until I earned the quest item. At first, the world seemed semi-linear, however you will open more ways to all sides, push a stone into water, activate quick travel transport or unlock a jump button. Furthermore there are collectibles and treasures. I got stuck somewhere in the late game. This should be considered a preview of what I could achieve in 11 hours of gameplay.

Good story, adequate art work depending if you like the style and unique levels. Every level is unique but at the end of the days it's a pinball game. Fine control is nearly impossible so you may end up spending 5-10 min in the same level to try and hit that one bloody spot. It's a relatively short game but depending on the sale it can be a very high value for the play time.

My Video Review is available here: https://youtu.be/2gkFQb7v-Gc Have I enjoyed playing Yoku's Island Express? The answer is positive. At least most of the time. I really like the positive relaxed atmosphere of the game, sense of humor, many original refreshing ideas, variability of the environment, user friendly controls, beautiful graphics, relaxing music and sounds. What I do not like so much are confusing game map which causes tiresome wandering sometimes and creeping stereotype that come sooner or later despite all original ideas in the game due to the simple game mechanics. Maybe some RPG elements would make it more motivating yet. And of course the local co-op would suit the game as well. Relaxed atmosphere makes the game suitable for family playing but as many puzzles are not so trivial and you need to read to know what to do I would only recommend it for school aged kids. Pros: - relaxing atmosphere - sense of humor - refreshing ideas - environment - controls - audiovisuals Cons: - confusing map - creeping stereotype - absence of dubbing Yoku’s Island Express is definitely not a flawless game but as it has many features making it suitable for playing by fellow Gaming Fathers and their families I am giving it Thumbs Up and VideoGaming Father’s Index 7+ out of 10 - recommended with some discount.
