About Hunt: Showdown 1896 – Sage of Joseon

About this DLC

This DLC contains one Hunter, two Weapons, two Tools, one Frame, and one Avatar:

  • Roaming Sage (Hunter)
  • Cold Patience (Uppercut)
  • Yecheon’s Treasure (Hunting Bow)
  • Tiger’s Fury (Dynamite Stick)
  • Winged Purity (Waxed Dynamite Stick)
  • Roaming Sage (Frame)
  • Roaming Sage (Avatar)

Roaming Sage

Cho Byeong-hak, a seonbi, longed to leave the tidy boundaries of the royal court—and a diplomatic mission to the United States became his chance. Once there, he heard whispers about a strange new blight, and set out to lend his skills to quelling it.

Cold Patience

Roaming Sage embossed his firearms with plum blossoms in mother of pearl. The extravagance is a necessary reminder that success takes time, and good aim takes patience.

Yecheon’s Treasure

Roaming Sage trained in the martial arts in Yecheon, a region known for skilled archers. Each arrow he shoots from this bow feels like a cost paid: one more threat contained, but one more pang of nostalgia.

Tiger’s Fury

A seonbi must master himself before he can bring order to the world around him, but the death-cursing monsters of this new land enrage Roaming Sage. This dynamite expresses what his face cannot: fire, heat, a smile.

Winged Purity

There is little use for courtly skills in the Hunt, but Roaming Sage doesn’t want to lose them. He paints cranes upon waxed dynamite, for these birds, though beautiful, are still terrors to the surface of the water.

Wherever a threat to order goes, Cho Byeong-hak will follow. He wears his mask and gat to let other Hunters know his credentials—and so that he’ll never forget his mission.

He was born to a well-off family in Joseon’s province of Jeolla, one of the eight provinces of Korea. Early on, he was granted the best education in politics, sociology, ethics, literature, and even battlefield tactics. He spent a portion of his youth in Yecheon, where he learned martial arts and excelled at archery. It was all for the singular goal of becoming a seonbi: a highly respected scholar and arbiter of social law. When that day came, he swore to uphold justice, dispense wisdom, and live his life as a servant of the people.

But he quickly learned that a seonbi’s life was less about enforcing peaceful lines, and more about staying within the lines drawn by his superiors—sensible or not. He preferred his time out in the city, where he spoke with the poor, gave advice when needed, and helped knock heads when words didn’t work. At court, he pushed for reforms and was labeled a hot-headed youngster who didn’t know any better. As he aged, his convictions only hardened, and the amusement of the people he challenged turned to anger. He spent much of his time dealing with political opponents’ undermining, and there, too, his martial training came in handy.

Then came the opportunity for a diplomatic mission to the United States. Byeon-hak signed up at once, eager to relieve his wanderlust. It was only by chance, wandering the halls of the Capitol, that he overheard a hushed conversation between a delegate and a military official about a strange contagion. He knew that to uphold his vows, he had to act. So instead of returning to Joseon...he slipped away, down to the south, to investigate for himself. There he found Corruption, and his new purpose.

For the dead to walk is unnatural, and should never be allowed. Byeon-hak intends to heal this darkness, or at least to understand it—because as a scholar of history, he knows how time moves in circles. It is highly possible that Corruption existed before, elsewhere. And if it is allowed to spread, it will be a greater threat than any court or any kingdom can contain.
