About Assemble with Care

About this game

From the studio that brought you Monument Valley comes a story about a globe-trotting antique restorer. As she arrives in the sun-soaked town of Bellariva, she has no idea just how broken it will turn out to be.

When Maria, a globe-trotting antique restorer, arrives in the sun-soaked town of Bellariva, she has no idea just how broken it will turn out to be. She wants nothing more than to help the town’s inhabitants save their most beloved possessions, but when it’s their personal lives that are starting to fracture, she’ll need to find a way to hold them together, one spare screw at a time.

MEANINGFUL PUZZLES: Figure out the inner workings of the objects brought to Maria and find a way to fix them.

EVOCATIVE STORY: Meet the townsfolk of Bellariva. Come to love their quirks and help them reconnect.

NOSTALGIC CHARM: Rediscover the defining objects of decades past to the tune of the original soundtrack, inspired by the sounds of the 80s.

HANDCRAFTED VISUALS: Enjoy gameplay rendered in a beautiful, impressionist style, alongside a completely hand-illustrated story.

Definitely an interesting game - between bits of story you take apart an object/machine and put it back together, repairing any broken parts and sometimes adding new ones. The controls are relatively easy and for the sake of the game there are few screws that are all the same size and parts will lock into the place they can be put. Circuit boards connected by wires are marked so that you can match like symbols, and on the whole it's a pleasant diversion for a few hours. Sadly, aside from the epilogue none of the machines are likely to really be a challenge aside from the occasion where (well, at least when I forgot one) a piece is left out and the whole thing has to be disassembled again to put it in. And there doesn't seem to be any variation or anything, so the replayability is severely limited. That said, just the act of disassembling and reassembling the objects being relaxing and accompanied by the story made it worth the playthrough, and it's a game I'll remember fondly and may revisit in the future.

I would describe this game as time well spent. In little over an hour and a half, you get to enjoy sweet storytelling intersected with the repair and maintenance of increasingly complex devices. The game is slow-paced, and I believe that was the intention of the makers. Realistically, you can speedrun through it in about 20 minutes, if you feel like it, but taking your time, just relaxes your mind and lulls you in the story. The repair part of the game is not that difficult, so this would also be a perfect bedtime story for the kids. A little bit of storytelling, a little bit of mechanical engineering, and voila, your kid is fast asleep dreaming of fixing your old hand mixer that's collecting dust on the counter for over a year.
