About Beyond a Steel Sky

About this game

From Charles Cecil, creator of the Broken Sword series, with art direction by Dave Gibbons, legendary comic book artist behind ‘Watchmen’, comes ‘Beyond A Steel Sky’, the long awaited sequel to the cult classic ‘Beneath a Steel Sky’.

You are Robert Foster. A child has been abducted in a brutal attack. You have vowed to bring him home. The trail has led you to Union City, one of the last remaining mega-cities in a world ravaged by shattering wars, and political meltdown.

Union City is a utopia, its people loving life under the control of an altruistic AI: ever-attentive androids, designer living, piazzas and bars. What’s not to love? But this City has a dark underbelly...

‘Beyond a Steel Sky’ is a dramatic, humorous, cyberpunk thriller in which engaging puzzles drive a fast-paced narrative set in a dynamic gameworld that responds to – and is subverted by – the player’s actions.

Features:

The World

  • An adventure set within a dynamic world, populated by wilful characters driven by motivations that the player can subvert. In combination with a unique hacking tool, multiple solutions to puzzles emerge from player choices.

The Story

  • Unravel dark conspiracies, defeat a terrifying antagonist in this dramatic, humorous, cyberpunk thriller, which explores contemporary themes: social control, AI, and total surveillance.

The puzzles

  • Intelligent puzzles are interwoven with an intriguing dramatic narrative to deliver a compelling gameplay experience.

The Look

  • A beautifully detailed, comic-book styled world, from the mind of legendary comic artist Dave Gibbons.

Decent adventure game - it made me want to reply the 1994 original game

I bought Beyond a Steel Sky for one reason and one reason only: nostalgia. I played Beneath a Steel Sky back in the day and remembered it fondly, even if most of the details had long since been evicted from my memory to make room for more important things, like where I left my car keys. As an adventure game, this is a solid effort. The puzzles are generally fair and of moderate difficulty. Once you understand the game's core mechanics, most solutions become reasonably logical, which is refreshing in a genre that occasionally mistakes insanity for puzzle design. The soundtrack is probably the strongest part of the experience, doing a great job of carrying the atmosphere while you're wandering around trying to remember why you came into this room. The story, unfortunately, is a bit cliché. Not bad, just familiar. The graphics are decent too, although my PC seemed to believe it was rendering the next Mars landing. I had to lower the graphical settings because my machine was getting so hot that it started sounding like it was preparing for takeoff. Nothing ruins immersion quite like wondering whether the next thing to crash will be the protagonist or your CPU. In the end, I enjoyed the game. But the funniest thing is that after finishing this modern sequel, my first reaction wasn't "I should play this again." It was "You know what? I kind of want to replay the 1994 original." I'm not entirely sure whether that's a compliment to Beyond a Steel Sky or a testament to how good Beneath a Steel Sky still is.

Good game to enjoy for a short while

While the world is beautiful and the voice acting is great, the writing outside of the main plot is annoying. Talking to characters is like talking in circles, a lot of repetition. Maybe it was made to hammer in important info to remember but a simple notebook with quests would have made it so much easier to keep track of tasks. Walking and running is very slow, yet if they were optimized we would soon realize that the maps are very small as is the game. It can be completed in 10+ hours where most of it is wasted on slow running or listening to repetitive time-wasting padding. If you ignore all the typical genre flaws, lack of 3D experience of the devs and recognize that it is not a triple-A title, you will find a pretty decent game with nice characters and story.
