The first time I played Disgaea, I played for the characters and story and enjoyed the gameplay. I barely scratched the surface of the item world. The second time I played Disgaea, I was all about the item world and spent countless hours exploring, leveling up items and combining attributes it became a different, better game for me. The trouble was that when I occasionally went to play a story mission, my items and weapons were so overpowered it was far too easy. Still, 5 stars since you get a great experience whichever way you play.
