About Martha Is Dead

About this game

Developed by LKA and published by Wired Productions.

Martha Is Dead is a dark psychological thriller FPS set during World War II in Italy. The desecrated body of a young woman is found drowned, and it turns out to be Giulia's twin sister, Martha. In the midst of the tragedy of war, she must find the truth about her sister's murder, which turns out to be shrouded by folklore and the horrors of war.

Authentic Italian

Martha Is Dead's default language is Italian to cause an easier immersion into the setting and story.

From The Creators Of The Town Of Light

Martha Is Dead is the second game by the award-winning developer, which specialises in reality-based narrative games that focus on tough subjects.

Many Layers

There is a lot to unpack and explore in this title, from loss, relationships and the psychological impact of such a dark point in our history — everything is explored unabashedly through a young woman's point of view. One who also has secrets of her own.

Faithful Recreation

Explore the gorgeous Tuscany countryside, which was lovingly crafted to be as close to reality to bring even more realism. Whether you want to do so on bike, by boat, or on foot is up to you!

Remember The Past

Using marionette puppets, you'll uncover repressed memories by playing with them.

Folklore!

The story is laced in with some folklore, too, so you'll be able to unlock symbols and use tarot cards to summon the spirit of The Lady.

Sense Of Doom

To add to the tension of war, you can collect newspapers and telegrams and listen to the radio to get updates on the situation, giving a sense of imminent danger.

Photographs

Take pictures and use realistic methods to develop them through a fully functional in-game darkroom! Although you need to take photos as part of the progression, you can do so as a hobby, too!

Haunting Soundtrack

Lastly, to complete the authentic experience, the game has a phenomenal atmospheric soundtrack! Composed by the same composer as the music in The Town of Light: Aseptic Void. The tones are moody yet spine-tingling. Additionally, the game features reimagined versions of classic tracks, including Schubert's Ave Maria and O Bella Ciao.

It's an artsy walking simulator with horror elements, more a work of art than a game. If that sounds like something you'd like, you'll probably appreciate the psychological story, historical setting and grotesque imagery. It takes place in Italy toward the end of WWII and the setting factors into the story. You play as a girl whose twin sister dies under mysterious circumstances, and it's up to you to figure out what happened. The most memorable bits are the abstract, psychological nightmares and the allusions to Italian folklore. Some of the imagery is graphic and stomach churning, however only a few moments are something I'd consider scary (as a survival horror fanatic). It covers serious themes of wartime trauma and mental health issues. The psychological thriller aspect is compelling and rather creative. The gameplay consists mostly of exploring the environment for key items and taking photos with the in-game camera. There are ample quick time events, but you cannot fail, thankfully. One side mission involves deciphering morse code, and that was the most fun puzzle, while the rest are fairly straight-forward. There's a twist at the end that I personally find a bit dubious and makes most of the game before it questionable, but that's open to interpretation, so it's up to you how you view the ending. Other than that, the story was captivating, for me. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone struggling with mental health issues, as the tone is rather dreary and there are themes of self-harm. The game does show signs of its indie origins (facial animations are used only in the opening and closing cutscene and for most of the game, no human characters are on-screen), but it does look nice. The technical performance isn't great, but acceptable (don't recommend trying ray tracing, though). A memorable experience overall. I'd give it 3.5 stars if that was an option.
