Sydney Hunter and the Curse of the Mayan is a love-letter to 8-bit action adventure games with challenging platformer gameplay and a huge number of Maya-inspired bosses.
You play as Sydney Hunter, adventure supreme, who by sheer luck manages to get trapped inside a massive Maya pyramid. He soon discovers that the "Feathered Serpent" Kukulkan has broken up the sacred Haab calendar into seven individual pieces and has hidden them inside the very same pyramid!
Widespread chaos and a time freeze will certainly follow if the Haab calendar isn't located and put back together. With the support of the local Maya population, Sydney Hunter must now find all seven pieces of the Haab calendar, defeat Kukulkan, and return peace and balance in the Maya civilization.

I try to give platformers a go every now and then even though it's not my favourite genre of games out there. I didn't enjoy Sydney Hunter at all. It is a veeeeery slow game, everything takes forever, walking, cutscenes, animaltions, everything. Maybe that is the retro part of the game that is just not fot me though.

I absolutely love the gameplay in this game. The only gripe I have about it is the save system. It's super inconsistent. Some things autosave and some things only save at shrines. I wish it either was all one way or all another way because I have trouble remembering what I need to do over again if I die. It takes a lot of the fun out of it to the point that I haven't returned to playing what was a very fun game up until it got confusing.

It has elements from games like Rick Dangerous, Montezuma's Revenge and 1001 Spikes, challenging but not too hard. Good mix of exploration and combat. Replaying some levels in order to get missing items can be a bit repetitive. Keyboard controls are not fully remappable so bear that in mind if you're not using a controller.
