Set in a grim land plagued by war, Tails of Iron is an epic adventure-RPG with punishingly brutal combat. As Redgi, heir to the Rat Throne, you must restore your broken Kingdom by banishing the merciless Frog Clan and their ferocious leader, Greenwart.

As you explore the deceivingly charming world, you’ll encounter a cast of unique companions, ready to aid you in your adventure. And you’ll need all the help you can get, whether that’s new meal recipes, blueprints to forge deadly weapons and armour, or even a land-chugging, armour-plated mole mobile!

Overcome your fears. Rescue your brothers. Restore Your Kingdom.

Your tail has begun…

Free expansion: Bloody Whiskers

Bloody Whiskers is a free expansion that introduces a new post-campaign questline, two additional difficulty modes, five new bosses, a selection of special armours and weapons, and a secret that was perhaps better left forgotten… With the tyrannical Greenwart now defeated, King Redgi’s vast lands chime with celebration. But the recently crowned saviour isn’t free to rest easy on his throne just yet. As decreed by an ancient Rat tradition, the new King must prove his worth… in a deadly trial of combat.

Free expansion: Bright Fir Forest

Bright Fir Forest is the second free expansion that continues Redgi’s regal journey. Featuring 13 new quests - this end-game expansion takes the young Rat King to the Squirrels’ renowned Festival of Leaf Fall, adds three new challengers in the Mole Arena, further broadens character customisation with new weapons and armour, includes eight cosmetic upgrades for Crimson Keep, and more.

Crimson Knight downloadable content

Includes exclusive Crimson Knight Set:

  • 3 x Armour Skins
  • 3 x Helmet Skins
  • 3 x Weapon Skins
  • 3 x Shield Skins

Digital soundtrack

Need a break from the daily grind of Frog slaughter? Put your paws up and enjoy a nice glass of chilled bug juice with the official Tails of Iron soundtrack. Composed by the royally-recognised Francesco Ameglio, these 20 tracks will take you on a journey across Rat Kingdom without having to leave the comfy confines of Crimson Keep.

Soothe your soul to the medieval strings of your fellow Rats. Claw-pump your way through the rhythmic war drums of the Frog army. ‘Robot’ like no-one’s looking with the synth-supremacy of the neo-futuristic mole-musik. All this and more awaits in this Bohemian Ratsody for the ages. Your soundtrack begins, my liege…

Digital artbook

Leaf through the beautiful hand-drawn visuals of Tails of Iron in this lovingly-crafted digital art book, with over 45 pages of exquisite illustrations from Odd Bug Studio’s acclaimed adventure-RPG. The book features the work of Tails of Iron character artist, designer, and animator Daniel Robinson, and environment artist Martin Reimann, and takes readers on a journey through the fantasy-medieval, anthropomorphic Rat Kingdom to meet its determined young heir, its furry inhabitants… and its wart-ridden antagonists.

Brutal frog stomping Regicide

The game is fantastic in terms of art, sound, fluid controls. The quest structure becomes extremely repetitive and grindy at times. The combat, while extremely well done, doesn’t have a ton of depth. It’s the typical dodge, parry, stab/slash loop. It does expand a bit with adding a bow and switching between heavy and light weapons, but to flesh this out, it just throws multiple enemies that you have to juggle, usually ranged and melee, at different sides of the screen. So you’ll be juggling getting shot at, while the bigger enemy pelts you with heavy attacks. It is extremely tactical, tedious, and fights can stretch an inordinate amount of time. Boss fights can be extremely fun and brutal though. I actually had a tougher time with some regular enemies than the bosses, but it’s still a fun time. I would’ve really liked to have seen more metroidvania type exploration and ability acquisition, over the contrived fetch type battle quests that funnels you into doing a constant triangle fast travel loop. Having gear options with actual stats, true rarity tiers would’ve made gear hunting and acquisition way more worthwhile. There are a degree of stats, but it’s very odd and not as satisfying as when you find loot that’s instantly recognizable as legendary/epic. The story and narration are top tier stuff and well very much keep you engaged in Regi’s tail/tale. Even if the poor rat has to trudge through an insane amount of bugs to get his vengeance. It is wildly impressive for an indie title though. A lot of love went into the game and story, and that’s very much apparent. I haven’t played the sequel yet, and hopefully it addresses the failings, shortcomings of the progenitor. Regardless, if you’re a fan of tactical, precise, patient, combat, you’ll love this game. If you are looking for a metroidvania type experience though, this won’t be your huckleberry. It does have slight elements, but they very much aren’t the focus and are after thoughts. It’s one hell of an impressive flagship title for an indie studio though.
