About Volcanoids

About this game

It’s just you and a steampunk drill in the survival game Volcanoids.

An Adaptive Island Adventure

In Volcanoids, players embrace the challenge of an ever-morphing volcanic island. Its persistent eruptions shape and reshape the landscape, unveiling new regions teeming with resources and secrets. Utilising the unique capabilities of the steampunk drillship, players can navigate the underground labyrinth to escape the fallout of the eruptions.

Engage In Robotic Combat

The island is far from deserted, it is teeming with hostile mining robots. These mechanical adversaries come in a variety of forms, prowling both the surface and the subterranean layers of the island. Players can engage in combat, scavenging useful technology and materials from the dispatched robots, while annihilating the remaining threats.

Unleash Creativity And Strategy

The drillship serves as a mobile fortress and is the cornerstone of survival. It can be tailored and upgraded according to the players' needs and strategic approach. As they progress through technology tiers, players can not only expand and automate their fortress but also arm it with weapons, preparing for any forthcoming challenges.

I was pleasantly surprised by how full, functional and extensible the alpha of Volcanoids was. I observed zero game-breaking bugs or glitches, and after my 2nd playthrough, i don't think there are any minor ones either (on the unmodded version of the game. Mods do introduce bugs in). I can't talk much about the story, since it's pretty much a placeholder. But what i can talk about was the gameplay loop. It was surprisingly gripping. The game does not feature any "survival" stats, but does feature a simple yet extensive production system that is located in your ship, which doubles as your base of operations. Mechanics were surprisingly more thought out for a game in its alpha state. Many craftables in-game can facilitate for a more fun multiplayer experience. Overall a solid experience, and for the price, it's a steal if you're into what the game's offering. Subtracted one star considering the rough edges that feel weird in comparison to the polish of the rest of the alpha.

A fun survival game in early access. Should be even better at final release.

This is a fun survival game. The drill ship is an interesting mechanic. Some balancing will need to happen between early access and final release, but the existing systems are solid and show a great deal of future potential. As of now, the devs are active so it looks promising that it will make it to final release.

Bring 2-3 friends, wouldn't recommend it solo.

Good game, but not very well optimized. Can be fun with friends. But I often found myself without a motive to continue. Still very impressive indie game and I would definitely recommend it, if you have at least 2-3 friends to play with.

Great concept for a game. I look forward to updates as iv'e been keeping an eye on the progression of the game though the years, and it has made some seriously cool progress. Some things I would like to see in the future would be first of all better textures, for a game released in 2019 it's kinda rough on the eyes but not a dealbreaker. Some story would be nice, maybe something on why you are here and something to do with rivals would be cool alongside an overall story. Otherwise, the game is pretty fun, nothing too deep gameplay is simple, but the progression never makes it feel like you're just doing the same thing over and over, it feels quite nice to upgrade and progress. Fights are really simple at first, but they start getting more chaotic as you go on, so that's nice. Overall I recommend you get this game on sale and wait for some more updates, but it's fun to mess around now with the game in its current state, I will be playing through the game before trying out mods.
