About Alwa's Awakening

About this game

In Alwa's Awakening, you play as Zoe, a heroine sent from another world to bring peace to the land of Alwa. Equipped only with a magic staff she awakens in a distant land and must set out to help the people. Traverse dangerous dungeons, meet interesting and fun characters and explore the world in this 8-bit adventure game. Just like the old classics, you won't have a flashing arrow telling you exactly where to go and what to do next. Instead, you are free to find your own way and by using your magic staff you can progress through the over 400 unique challenging rooms in the game.

With easy-to-understand controls the game is easy to learn but tough to master, just like how games were in the old days!

Alwa's Awakening is a 8-bit Metroidvania that focuses on solving puzzles, going through hidden structures, and avoiding stationary spike balls of instadeath that are peppered everywhere in the latter areas of the game. The main focus of the game is to solve puzzles to unlock areas, collect magical abilities and items, defeat bosses, and revisit previously unreachable locations with your new abilities. You play as Zoe and she walks throughout the game. A run button would've been nice but her movement speed helps you avoid stationary spike balls of instadeath. Zoe has 3 lives (can add water to a flask for 3 more). Metroidvania veterans will probably not be overwhelmed by the game's challenge and probably won't find the boss battles that difficult after learning their attack patterns. A save point that replenishes your 3 hearts is never that far away and each area has a place where you can warp to different locations. People who don't play Metroidvania games may struggle and wish that there were more save points. The developers have added assists to the game that can be toggled in the main menu for people who want them. The map is a standard Metroidvania map. The game limits enemies to usually 1 or 2 on a particular screen. When you move to the next screen and back those enemies will respawn. Your magical abilities will come in handy to fight them or defend against them. A few of them have interesting abilities. Your main enemy outside of the bosses is the environmental hazards. Two of the magical abilities require upgrades to extend what they can do. In some places they are meant to be used one right after the other. I found the last section of the game difficult but the last boss was easy after figuring out its attack pattern. This game feels and looks like it came out of the 80s except that this game runs perfectly at all times.

great retro-metroidvania. it doesn't break new grounds, but checks all the boxes for genre lovers and makes everything exactly as it should be. character is a bit slow, but controls are tight and progression is very rewarding.

Great NES platformer with good replay value for alternative routes

Great NES call back of a game that has a slow start but fulfilling completion and interesting abilities for mobility. Has replay potential and paths in the achievements that makes the game more interesting the second play through. Single player and basic combat as typical of a game emulating NES platformers like older castlevanias and megamans but with a smaller scope with less bosses and a overall interconnected stage.
