About The Forgotten City

About this game

Developed Modern Storyteller and published by Dear Villagers.

The Forgotten City is a mystery adventure game centred around exploration, deduction, and smart choices. With your power to rewind time, you'll go back 2000 years and try to unravel the mystery of who destroyed the ancient underground city.

Be Whoever You Want

Choose your character's gender, origin, and backstory before heading into the mysteries of the ancient Roman City. Aside from your narrative, you'll be able to control how you react before intense moral dilemmas that will have life-and-death consequences. Be careful before you act! After all, the fate of the entire city is in your hands.

Questions Not Fists

Throughout your playthrough, you'll interrogate many colourful characters, each with their own personality and life. Whilst combat and violence is an options, they will only get you so far; use your head, and work smart, not hard.

Not the Only Way

Thankfully, fists and questions aren't the only way you can go about your business in The Forgotten City: reason, charm, bribe, and intimidate your way through the playthrough! And that's if you can't just learn to exploit the time loop.

Think, Think

Aside from getting to know the cast of characters, finding the multiple endings, and walking around the beautiful open world, you'll also spend a ton of time solving puzzles and challenges that will keep your mind engaged!

Open-World

Roam around freely through the open-world setting of ancient Rome, with historically-authentic art, architecture, costumes, and customs! It's easy to get immersed in The Forgotten City.

Great mystery game. It was gathering dust in my library for some time but once I picked it up I was glued to the screen. Very dense dialogue driven adventure. Absolutely worth full price but I got a good deal here.

Modders made good with this good little mystery.

Expanded from a 2015 Skyrim mod into a full game, by a small development team, this historical mystery is well worth the price as a standalone experience. Its gameplay and environment are reminiscent of Skyrim, but the story context in which that exists resembles a thinking man's adventure game, so to speak. It's best not to know too much going in, but if you like thoughtful dialogue-based games, or charisma/intelligence runs of RPGs, this might be for you. It's also not a long game, or at least the time seemed to fly by. If you get hooked, you may just complete it in one session like I did. It's a tightly-packaged gem that, despite the understandable roughness of a non-AAA title, very much succeeds in its objective.

What an absolutely incredible game. This narrative and story-driven experience is top-notch. I cannot wait for this publisher's next game. So impressed that such though-provoking material is contained within this sub-10 hour experience. What an excellent purchase this was!

Amazing game! The story is way deeper and more intricate then the Skyrim mod it's based on. The graphics are pretty awesome for a 3-person team, even if some things may look a bit janky at times. The combat is pretty shallow and only an occasional distraction. The amount of work, research and love that went into this game is amazing. Highly recommend if you're a fan of point-and-click or puzzle games with deep lore.

This is a story-driven adventure game where the characters are trapped in an ancient Roman-themed purgatory. The diety that trapped them there forces the characters to go through a ground-hog day loop when someone sins. The player's job is to end the loop by leaving the area, killing someone responsible for the time loop, or convincing the diety to stop. There's a wee sprinkle of first-person shooting zombies with a bow and arrow that's of little salience. The Forgotten City will most likely take 1 or 2 days to finish. The Italian Plumber achievement was bugged for me when I decided to enter the upper cistern unconventionally at the end of the story. If you make it there without the key as you get the bow and arrow you should get the achievement. In particular, I enjoyed fulfilling the hermit's desire for a philosophical debate on where ethics come from.
