Virgo Versus the Zodiac is a sci-fi/fantasy JRPG inspired by the Mario & Luigi RPG series and the Mother RPG series in which you play as an obsessed villain.
The game features traditional turn-based combat with real-time execution of moves: blocking, countering and timing your attacks carefully as well as predicting your foes' moves is essential to succeed in Virgo’s twisted and unforgiving cosmic quest to bring back the Golden Age, a period of peace, symmetry and balance, or so she thinks.
In this galaxy where every action means a reaction, you’ll play as Virgo, the Holy Queen, often called Dreadful Queen by heretics, bringing mayhem to the Zodiac Realms and leaving a trail of stardust on the way, all to fit her excessively righteous worldview.
- A unique turn-based combat system featuring timed actions and counterattacks that favors a balance of offense and defense, rewarding a deliberate mind and swift fingers.

Virgo Versus The Zodiac is a very "indie" turn-based JRPG with quick times events and a low detail pixel art style. The developers themselfs claim that it was inspired by the "Mario & Luigi RPG series and the Mother RPG series" and that claim is definitely true, it's just that all of this combined just makes for a very specific type of game, that I personally am not that big of a fan of.
For some people this will be a 10/10 game, but it simply wasn't that great for me.

Very weird but interesting take on an RPG. The combat takes some time getting used to but is quite fun once you to. The graphics and soundtrack are adorable.

Small RPG with a lot of charm.
General good sense of humor with a propensity to intentionally bad jokes, puns and double entendres.
Maybe I could have enjoyed the writing a bit more if I was at all familiarized with astrology and the qualities ascribed to each sign.
The narrative falls flat for me. From beginning to end I was kind of bored with the whole adventure. The story did a poor job of engaging me in what was happening.
They don’t give you information about what the main character’s is planning to do until chapter 2 or so, and even then, the information given to the player is pretty vague. The only thing you know is Virgo is on her way to restore the universe to a more righteous way of living… whatever that means, and to accomplish that she must duke it out with all the other Zodiacs and attain their crowns.
Most of the characters are so goddamn passive aggressive that their banter ends up feeling obnoxious, despite the dialogues providing a good chuckle here and there.
The combat is very entertaining. The timed-based mechanics keep the tension during encounters and it was fun to manage equipment items to develop new strategies against different enemies.
Shoot ‘em up sections are a welcome change of pace to transition in and out of levels.
Music is nice.
Side quests are generally boring.
In conclusion, this was kind of a mixed bag for me. The story didn’t grip me at all, I didn’t feel attached to the characters or interested in their motivations at all… For me those are essential components of a good RPG, so I cannot recommend this game.
