There are seemingly endless amounts of indie games released every day, so standing out isn't as simple as creating a fresh gimmick. Sometimes, it's about combining what the best of the best are offering, twisting it in a unique and interesting way. The Rabbit Haul is one of those cases, working with what's already great and making its own take on a variety of genres.

It's easy to look at The Rabbit Haul and compare it to Cult of the Lamb, thanks to its exciting art style. Perhaps you'll watch gameplay and see that it resembles tower defence classics like Plants Vs Zombies or Bloons. Maybe there's even a hint of Stardew Valley and Vampire Survivors baked into the premise. All of these are true, but what The Rabbit Haul does is blend them so well, it's almost shocking that no one had thought of doing the same thing before.

Is The Rabbit Haul good?

If you're a fan of the aforementioned games, absolutely. Mashing together some of the best indie games and somehow making all those ingredients work is not easy. In fact, it’s a hopping difficult one. Yet despite that, The Rabbit Haul pulls it off with a charming experience. You start with your town in ruins, and as the last farmer standing, you have to head into the wilderness, plant crops, nurture your harvest, and bring it all back to your haul. Before long, you’ll have a lovely bounty of fresh produce. Sounds like a peaceful life, doesn’t it? Well, that’s until the raccoons show up.

Once night falls, these pesky little trash pandas emerge to nick everything you’ve worked so hard to grow. Thankfully, you’re not just going to stand there and let them run off with your dinner. You can spend your days planting defensive crops to protect your haul, while also wielding all manner of weapons, from magical wands to good ol’ trusty swords. A little excessive, perhaps, but when you’re facing raccoons that make Rocket look like a harmless woodland creature, you'll be happy you have them in your backpack.

Surviving each night earns you more currency and, hopefully, a fresh batch of crops, giving you the chance to beef up your defences as things get progressively tougher. Plant carrots and strawberries, position your towers close together, and collect crystals to level up and unlock new abilities. If you’re a fan of roguelites, you’ll recognise plenty of these tricks. Fancy having spinning blades orbiting you? Go for it. Want to make your strawberries more valuable when it’s time to sell? You can do that, too.

Even if a run ends in disaster, you’ll still come away with currency to spend back in town. You can rebuild homes to improve life for the residents, or invest in upgrades to make your weaponised crops even more effective when you head out for another night of raccoon-bashing. You can also discover all sorts of improvements for your towers, and some of them will absolutely pulverise those pesky critters. Have fun with those.

If you're looking to give it a try, you can grab The Rabbit Haul at a great discount for launch. Currently, we have the game for just £8.25 / $11.99, meaning you get a 20% discount off the retail price. For hours of indie fun, that's a great offer, so don't miss out while it's available.
