Dark Souls but open-world!
FromSoftware has done a great job with the open-world despite it being their first real attempt at it. There are tons of unique areas to explore and the sense of scale of the map is superb. There are a large variety of enemy bosses and mini-bosses scattered around the world as well.
The combat feels better than ever with so many weapon types and new combat features. Guard counter, abilities that can be swapped onto different weapons, and jump attacks are all new additions to their combat system.
For those who are not so enthusiastic about Dark Souls, give this a try anyway. The open-world makes a significant difference from how their previous games were played. If you find a boss too difficult you can simply just ride your horse into the other direction. No need to bang your head over and over again on the same boss like the previous games required you to do.

Loving it so far. A lot more freedom to create your builds than other Souls games and there's so much to explore. The map is large but not too overwhelming as the areas have strong themes, and out of combat your mount doesn't require stamina and you can fast travel from anywhere in the overworld.
Beware that the deeper lore is mostly hinted at rather than spelled out. Don't expect to be able to run through without dying, overcoming strong enemies is the main appeal of this game. While it is challenging, the game provides a lot of ways to make it easier for yourself if it becomes too difficult (offline summons, 2 online friends, overleveling, access to upgrade materials from later areas).

The game is an incredIble open-world experience that really is one of a kind. If you are used to the Ubisoft format of open world I would encourage you to give Elden Ring a try. No shame in looking up a guide, it is definitely difficult for those who maybe have not played Dark Souls before. My recommendation for new players is to explore the open world right away. Elden Ring doesn’t have super strict level-required zones like other open worlds. Do not be afraid to explore!
