About Wings of Vi

About this game

Wings of Vi is a challenging 2D platformer in which you play as the angel Vi, tasked with defeating the Demon Lord Jeh’oul after he is freed from captivity. Throughout her journey, she must traverse dangerous worlds and fight countless hellspawn in order to discover where Jeh’Oul lurks and save the world from his demonic clutch.

The game takes inspiration from "Megaman", "Cave Story", and "Castlevania", along with a host of masochistic retro platformers, while cutting out the arbitrary difficulty of hidden traps and pixel-perfect jumps in favor of skill-based gameplay. The game aims to capture the attention of the same core group of players as its spiritual precursor, "I Wanna be the Boshy", including the hardcore-platformer lovers and the speedrunning community, all while appealing to a broader audience through a variety of difficulty levels and modifiers.

If you're a fan of really hard (but fair) platformers with a big focus on boss battles, I'd say give this game a try. The controls are a bit different from what we're used to in 2D platformers and it can take some time getting used to them, but once you get the hang of it, movement's pretty fluid and platforming can be lots of fun. I say "can" because the level design goes a bit overboard with the challenge and it can get a bit tiring (and frustrating) at times. Despite this I enjoyed most of it. The highlight for me are the boss battles. They're very challenging and varied, from the enemy design to their movements and mechanics, forcing you to adapt accordingly. Their patterns can be hard to deal with, but with a bit of patience and practice, you'll be able to read and react to them. Apart from that, I find the character designs very charming, with a balance of horny and cute that goes surprisingly well. I enjoyed exploring and discovering secret chests, which contain clothes and accessories with which you can customize the look of Vi. And also, the soundtrack is great.

This game was terrible, thank god I bought it on fanatical for only a dollar! This game is a platformer about angels and demon monsters with a vaguely anime inspired aesthetic. I was actually quite excited to play this game because the art style appeals to me but I was instantly put off by the controls. I have never played a platformer where it felt worse to jump, and I have been playing platformers since I was 4 years old with a sega genesis. It's difficult to explain the exact problem but basically the jumps in this game are all set up at odd angles and require you to maneuver within a tight time constraint with jump physics that severely lack any feeling of impact or weight or inertia. It altogether just feels very unsatisfying to play from moment to moment so I gave it the minimum score I could.

It's an annoying game that you play to be annoyed. A lot of review say it's tough but fair, personally I found it annoying and more annoying. The only reason I went as far as I did was because I was too lazy to switch to another game. Getting further in this game never felt rewarding to me, just more annoying, I like hard games, but this is more annoying than enjoyable. To me this is the same kind of annoying as the hardcore flappy bird clones, if you like annoying for the sake of annoying there's a lot of good annoyance to be had here. For the genre I'd probably rate it 4 maybe even 5 if you like annoying games it's good, but it gets 3 because I have to nix 2 stars for how awful I found the story world and characters to be. Which is totally a personal taste thing on my part. I like the art style though.

positive: on win 10 with keyboard & mouse, didn't have any crashes or other technical problems. negative: the game is very, very difficult. also, due to my understanding of the review guidelines, i don't believe i'm allowed to say what else i don't like about it. overall: would only recommend if you're interested in a challenge.
