There's trouble once again on the mean streets of River City, but this time the boys are in over their heads!
In this all-new entry in the legendary beat-'em-up series, hot-blooded heroes Kunio and Riki have been captured, leaving it to their hard-hitting girlfriends, Kyoko and Misako, to serve up some payback.
As you punch and kick your way across town - either solo or with a friend in a local co-op - you'll gain new skills, chow down on power-ups, wield an assortment of weapons, and unleash an arsenal of combos, throws, and special attacks that will leave the bad guys crying for mama - all in outrageous 16-bit style!

I have played a lot of beat 'em ups and this game is the best of the best by a large margin. The sequel may be better but I'm still waiting for that one to go on sale.
Pros:
> Great controls and combat system. I played through with an arcade stick but a gamepad would work just as well.
> Upbeat, banging original soundtrack that plays a big part in setting the tone for this brawler. Sound effects are impactful which sounds like an obvious thing to have in a beat 'em up but you'd be surprised when some miss the mark on sound design.
> The pixel art is beyond reproach. It's middle res with colour for days.
> Voice acting and animations really bring the characters to life
> The story is satisfyingly absurd with lots of humour. The the character portraits are on point and there are also some fully cel animated sections that are of the highest quality.
> I found the difficulty to be perfect for me. Some bosses I needed to come back to the next day before I could beat them.
> The continue/life system is good. You have infinite lives but each time you die a quarter of your money is cleaved off which makes for some strategic shopping.

Great game overall. Fighting loop is a bit simple however, but there are funny characters, dialogue and a few youtuber guests voicing the lines.
Story is also a bit simple, mostly comedic however, overall, good game if you just want a simple plug n' play experience and a silly storyline to follow
Fighting on normal difficulty does feel a bit difficult when it comes to certain stages or bossfights because of the healing system being quite stingy, otherwise, the actual moveset and patterns of most enemies are really simple.

The game has charm. Fun and well crafted animations, original music, character designs, etc. But when all that is stripped away, what you have is a very bare bones, poorly designed core game. Combos are cool but no more effective than mindless button mashing. The fights are repetitive and enemies take way to long to beat. A lot of time is spent waiting for them to get back up when knocked down. One boss early in the game was so tedious I was one failed attempt away from giving up on the game altogether. I don't think I'll end up finishing this game, but if I do, it'll be just because I looks nice on screen and has a cool soundtrack.
