Wanted to love this, but the game just drags on way longer then it needed to. I don't know why people compare this to Heretic. Heretic was short and sweet. Amid Evil level design is not nearly as intuitive, and the enemy and weapon design is lame. I can't quite put my finger on it, but the graphics look bad. It's like someone rubbed grease over every surface, and that's after you tweak it to get rid of the horrible flickering textures.
The core combat is functional but kind of boring. It's like the Dusk dev rushed this game out as quickly as possible to capitalize on the success of that game and didn't really have any clever ideas left.

I started gaming on Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Duke Nukem, Quake, Hexen, Heretic and so on. In short, I'm a boomer shooter aficianado. I've played all the reboots, Nightdive remasters and new games. I can say without reservation that Amid Evil is one of the best of the new crop. Playing like a mixture of Doom and Hexen, this game hits all the boomer shooter buttons with aplomb. While I loved Dusk and Ion Fury, this may be the best of the lot.

Fun spell-based shooter. Don't expect insane movement or very interesting weapons or mechanics unfortunately. Plays like a modernized Doom '97, just with staffs that throw out spells instead of the standard suite of weapons. Some weapons share the same pool of mana (ammunition) which makes for a modicum of choice, but overall isn't anything more than just fun. Which certainly isn't a bad thing, but compared to the other major NewBlood games like Ultrakill, Dusk, or even Gloomwood; which all aimed to push their respective game types in interesting ways, this feels relatively tame.
