A real joy to play trough using the RealRTCW mod. It's my first ever Wolfenstein game and it's safe to say that it's piqued my interest in checking out the rest of the series.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein is a WWII shooter with an alternative image of it, where you playing as an American agent, who has to stop a group of Germans to use cult powers to win the war. I played through this game on the hardest difficulty in 6 and half hours. The review will be based on that. One of my most liked thing in the game is the gameplay. This game is pretty much a run and gun game, where you need to do a few objectives per level, for example kill an officer, steal documents, blow up things and some other. Gun play is all right, weapons don't have pin point accuracy and they have recoil too, but the cross hair helps you to do the shooting. There are lot of different weapons too in the game, which you get progressively. What also makes this game quite fun to play, is the enemies, because they have different AI. There are lot different enemies in the game and they are not just different by look, but because of the weapon, but some of them has different behavior, which bring varied fights... and of course the enemies' stats are also different, so there are few baddies who take more bullets to go down or has more armor. I didn't even mentioned the secrets in the game, which can give you more ammo, health, weapons and also you can collect treasure too. I need to mention the game's issue in this topic, one of the is the stealth levels. There is a stealth system in the game, but sometimes it works weirdly. Sometimes enemies can't see you from 30 meters in front of them, but sometimes, they can hear your footsteps behind 2 walls. It can be really inconsistent, but for me, this issues happend only two times at one level. Other problem, is the back spawning. This is also a rare case, but there are levels, which the game likes to spawn enemies behind you, which is a really cheap way to add more to the difficulty. Also, sometimes enemies has insane amount of damage. In one occasion I fought against snipers and panzerfaust guys, and the explosion damage in this game sometimes ridiculous or a joke, and around the end, the enemies start to hit the most insane shot in their lives and kill you easily. I can understand, that around the end of the game, I get more experienced soldiers, but when they look injured, and barely holding up in a bombarded city, how the hell they doing more damage, then a fully relaxed soldier with the same weapon? Another sad thing to see, is the weak boss fights. What I mean by that, you don't need to do too much to take out the...

Graphically dated classic with a proper gameplay

I've got the game just to play it modded but only improving and fixing the game for modern systems, so I don't know my gametime. I tried it as a kid but never finished it, it was too scary, and looking at it now, I see why. There are some ugly zombies and jump scares, tough opponents. In one level I was fighting a boss and it was very frustratingly hard to beat him as I was stuck in a small area and there was only very linear approach how to kill him. The gameplay is pretty challenging even outside of that incident, interesting weapons but still pretty linear levels but some have big open areas so you need to be careful. One time I unlocked gate that was somewhere behind me, I went back through level I cleared just to be surprised by new enemies, they came from that locked area. The game has some punishing fall damage and enemies deal a lof of damage to you, however you can save scam so no worries about HP. It's got some hidden areas with loot too and funny enough you can heal yourself eating food, not only by health bags.
