Vanquish is fast paced frantic action and fun with plenty of Platinum’s signature style. The game is full of giant robots and cyborgs with lots of detail and impressive scale, but the levels are a bit bland and far too short with too many cut scenes interrupting the flow of the game. The graphics are good and the combat sequences are spectacular, but apart from the sliding mechanic and the overall presentation, none of the game is that different from any other third person cover based shooter.
The plot is predictable, the characters are dull stereotypes with little personality, and the banter between the 2 lead soldiers is poorly written and annoying to a fault. Tying the boost, melee, slow time and health systems together adds to the challenge, but it severely limits the fun and tactical options available to you. The levels have poor pacing and the soundtrack is smothered by the action, but it’s still fun to play and I enjoyed it whilst it lasted.

Essential action game; Platinum's flawless take on the cover shooter, ala Gears of War. In comparison to that game, Vanquished is far faster, and, as expected from a Platinum game, the player-character is highly mobile. To beat this game, you must learn how to best string together your plentitude of weapons and abilities.
The game's tone is far less gruff and grim in comparison to similar Western games. The player-character is a "super-soldier" assisting a squad of regular grunts who really don't want him there, but were struggling beforehand. This leads to banter and ally interactions that are typically quite humorous in banter. This game doesn't take itself very seriously at all; victory is always assumed. Because of the player-character, no obstacle is too much. It's just a matter of time until he defeats the enemy.
As we should expect by now, this is another excellent Sega published PC port, particularly late games of the 360 generation. It is also excellent on the Steam Deck (2011-2015 titles are where the Deck really sings), running maxed out at 60fps effortlessly. The extra input options on the Deck also allow for less button manipulation to open up all of your combat options, making it far more fluid to string them together, as the game demands.
Highly recommended. Often on sale for less than $5. No brainier.
