What to expect in the action fighter based on the hit anime franchise
Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles Digital Deluxe Edition
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba The Movie: Mugen Train was the highest-grossing film of 2020, making it not only the highest grossing film of a year in which cinema spluttered and attempted to survive during a life-changing (and in some cases, life-affirming) event - but the first time a non-Hollywood production has ever topped the annual box office.
The anime that the film is a sequel to is also incredibly popular and acclaimed, so it seemed rather inevitable and extremely likely that eventually, in the same vein as My Hero Academia, Dragon Ball and other popular anime properties that we would get a game based on the show, and that game is releasing later this year.
Want to learn more about it? Here's everything you need to know about Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba -The Hinokami Chronicles-
What is Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba -The Hinokami Chronicles-?
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles was announced originally back in March 2020, as an adaptation of the first season of the Demon Slayer anime and movie. However, the game went radio silent for a period and was re-announced in Weekly Shonen Jump in February 2021 as a PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One and Steam PC release.
The game is being developed by CyberConnect2 and published by Aniplex, with Ufotable, the animation studio that animated the anime (try saying that five times fast!) producing key illustrations and art for the game.
That’s great…. But what type of game is Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba -The Hinokami Chronicles-?
I’m glad you asked!
So the game is an arena fighter that takes events from both the series and the movie and translates them into a playable format. The main character, and your main playable character, of the game is Tanjiro - a Demon Slayer who is trying to avenge his fallen parents and save his sister, who has herself been transformed into a demon.
The main game features an adventure mode that puts Tanjiro in a series of fights against demons from the show, and challenges players to defeat them. The gameplay looks like an exhilarating mix of the best JRPG boss fights with standard fighting game mechanics.
The developers of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles, CyberConnect2, are mostly known for their anime adaptations, having worked on various Naruto games and Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, so anime fans can rest easy knowing the game is in safe hands.
What’s the roster?
The game will include characters from across both Demon Slayer and its spin off series, Chuukou Ikkan!! Kimetsu Gakuen Monogatari. The full roster (as confirmed thus far, note that there’s potential for more characters to be announced in the coming months before release) is as follows:
- Tanjiro
- Nezuko Kamoda
- Inosuke
- Zenitsu
- Rengoku
- Tomioka
- Urokodaki
- Sabito
- Makomo
- Shinobu Kocho
While it’s not as big as say, the Smash Bros Ultimate roster (perhaps an unfair comparison seeing as how many different games are represented, and how much sway Nintendo has over the industry as a whole, but you get what I’m trying to say), the roster has enough diversity in terms of gameplay to satisfy any potential player, and enough different characters that it won’t get boring when you’re fighting your friends.
Any pre-order bonuses?
If you pre-order the digital standard edition you’ll receive TWO bonus character unlock keys and the Tanjiro Kamado avatar. However, pre-ordering the digital deluxe edition of the game will get you everything the digital standard edition has - PLUS two days early access to the game.
Does Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles have a multiplayer mode?
Yes it does!
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles features a versus mode, in the same vein as the likes of Dragon Ball FighterZ that came before it. In the mode, players will create teams of two fighters chosen from a roster of 18 characters from both the main Demon Slayer series, and the anime spin-off Chuukou Ikkan!! Kimetsu Gakuen Monogatari.
And luckily for those players that prefer to play games with their friends in the room, the game will support both local and online multiplayer.
This all sounds great! So when can I get my hands on the game?
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles is releasing October 15th in North America and Europe, with those who pre-order the Digital Deluxe Edition gaining access to the game two days early on October 13th.
