About Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters

About this game

Lead humanity’s greatest weapon, the Grey Knights, against the corrupting forces of Chaos in this brutal and fast-paced turn-based tactical RPG. Root out and put a stop to an insidious plot to infect the galaxy with the Bloom, an intergalactic cosmic plague capable of rotting worlds into oblivion.

Armoured in faith, shielded by devotion, the Grey Knights’ very existence is rooted in mystery, enforced with mind-wipes and executions. Experience life in the 41st millennium and follow the journey of these elite warriors in a narrative penned by acclaimed Black Library author, Aaron Dembski-Bowden.

SHAPE THE FATE OF THE GALAXY

Upgrade your base of operations, build new facilities, conduct research into arcane mysteries and engage in combat missions across multiple worlds to purge the spread. The Bloom corrupts without prejudice; your choices will affect which planets succumb… and survive.

FORGE YOUR CHAMPIONS

Command your own, personalised squad of Grey Knights; learn a range of diverse skills and psychic abilities, unlock powerful equipment and specialise your champions into four unique standard and advanced classes. Each of your warriors can be customised with voice, armour and facial options to make them your own.

PRECISION TARGETING

Grey Knights are an elite chapter of Space Marines and are not in the business of making mistakes or missing their shots. The Precision Targeting system puts you in control of your tactical decisions, allowing you to plan your strategy with confidence, whether by taking shots from afar with sure-fire accuracy, or dismembering and dismantling a foe in brutal melee combat!

MUTATING MONSTROSITIES AND THEIR MINIONS

As the Bloom corrupts worlds, environments will evolve and erupt with deadly hazards and minions, cultists and the infamous Death Guard Chaos Space Marines will mutate with pestilent boons and blessings, giving them new attacks and abilities. Adapt your tried and tested strategies to overcome unsurmountable odds against towering foes and their servants.

CINEMATIC SLAUGHTER

Charge headlong into fast-paced tactical combat. Eviscerate and execute enemies up close in gory displays of prowess, or strike from afar with blessed bullets and powerful psychic energies. Use the dynamically destructible environment to your advantage by tearing down pillars or slamming vehicles into unsuspecting enemies.

Frustrating, unfun

The game isn't bad at all. What is bad is balancing and frustrating gameplay. There are certain builds that you have to have to win without frustration. The enemies constantly outnumber you instead of trying to outsmart you. The game gives you a few turns before throwing something random at you which could be even more enemies. Your characters look like huge armored men but go down in a few hits. Melee is much stronger than ranges to the point where ranged attacks is a disadvantage.

Fun but challenging

Solid game! Very Xcom-esque with a warhammer spin. Story isn't bad, the overworld seems to go a bit fast so that could be a bit slower, but it seems you aren't expected to be able to be everywhere at once. Overall a fun but challenging game

From the creators of one of the worst 40K video games since the downfall of Toy HeadQuarters, Inc. comes possibly the best 40K game I've played since Dawn of War II: Retribution... At least until Darktide comes out, hopefully. I know I've said that Sanctus Reach was one of the better turn-based 40K games and we all know how much praise Mechanicus got, but I've found the Matt Ward simulator to actually be a lot more enjoyable. As far as gameplay is concerned, I think the best way to describe it would be "XCOM but better", in that the way you move and shoot is heavily derived from Firaxis' XCOM games. As for the "but better" part, here's where I think the game improves on XCOM's formula: - No RNG outside crititcal hit mechanics. However, this will mean that weapons will suffer from damage falloff, and units can still be damaged through cover. - Weapons and abilities use action points, rather than ending your unit's turn outright. Only action that unconditionally ends a turn is overwatch. - And speaking of overwatch, it seems as if the dev team had found the long lost "vision cone" STC - Stun mechanic and melee executions allow you to maintain a sense of momentum, and getting those extra action points from performing an execution to me feels extremely rewarding. You're often playing at a disadvantage, and you're expected to stun and execute to help even the odds, or risk getting chipped away from a barrage of ranged attacks - The environment is also a weapon. Yes, I know that XCOM has flammable objects that you can throw a grenade at, and Daemonhunters also has that. However, there are also some shootable hazards in the form of plasma batteries, and there's the occasional pillar that you can shoulder check to knock over. - Melee Crits allow the player to inflict a debilitation of their choosing upon successful roll. However, I'll admit that while enjoyable, the game isn't really perfect. There are some bugs relating to how knockback is handled, and you can sometimes have an enemy occupy the same tile as one of your units. This is actually game-breaking to the point where you will be forced to reload an earlier save, since you cannot target those enemies with melee or ranged attacks. Another thing that I can agree with regarding some of the negative reviews I saw is that the Grey Knights that you can sometimes get as mission rewards can sometimes have unfavourable specializations, which can be annoying to work around especially if he needs to sub in for...

Similar enough to Xcom to get you addicted. Different enough to make you love it.

If you're not a WH40 lore nut and can ignore the inconsistencies, i.e. Grey Knights getting their ass handed to them by tiny humans, this is an amazing Xcom-esque game in the WH franchise. Feels more difficult than Xcom2, albeit a bit unfair at times with RNG events. Also no hit chances.

This game hits one of those perfect spots. It is a blend of xcom and warhammer, but in the vein of Mechanicus. It feels much more dynamic than that, and in fact I would say the decision between them falls down to faction preference, assuming you don’t want both. This game is challenging, as it should be. It is not overly complicated, but far from simple, and when you win it feels either earned, or by the skin of your teeth. Overall, if you like tactics games, relatively simple but well fleshed out mechanics, and want to slay demons, get this game.

Good derivative of modern XCOM-like games. It borrows some things from Gears Tactics and Chimera Squad, which end up complimenting the game well and encouraging a more aggressive playstyle. The Grey Knights you use don't have super much personality, and generally you won't really feel attached to them. The world map is alright, it starts off slow but opens up a lot after a few missions. Voice acting is quite good, but the cutscenes are not that great (although that's not the point of the game anyway). The plot is quite interesting though and I have had no hiccups with gameplay. Would recommend!
